App Store vs web billing: why the same AI plan has two prices

Short answer
An App Store subscription and a website subscription are two different billing channels with two different price lists. The App Store uses a regional list price per storefront — that is what "cheapest country" means. A product website normally bills one flat price and does not follow storefront pricing. So a country that is cheap in the App Store is not automatically cheap on the website, and vice versa.
Practical rule: pick the channel you can actually pay for, then compare prices only within that channel. The regional matrix tracks App Store prices; unified web plans have separate pricing pages.
Where the two recorded prices differ
Grok, Cursor and X now use The X Subscription for new customers. Their old App Store plans remain legacy subscriptions; their new web prices are excluded from this same-plan channel comparison. See the unified plans and legacy prices.
| Product | Plan | US App Store list | Catalog / web list | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Plus | $19.99/mo | $20.00/mo | same |
| Claude | Pro | $20.00/mo | $20.00/mo | same |
| CapCut | Pro | $19.99/mo | $9.99/mo | -50% web vs App Store |
The gap is largest where the vendor prices the website independently of app-store tiers. Where the two numbers match, the vendor is effectively passing the App Store tier through to web billing.
How to tell which channel a price belongs to
- Read where the number came from: an App Store sheet shows a local currency amount and a storefront country; a website checkout shows a flat price, usually USD.
- Check who manages the renewal: Apple subscriptions live under your Apple ID's Subscriptions; web billing lives in the vendor's account page.
- Check whether a region switch changes the number. If it does not, you are looking at web billing.
- Compare like with like: a cheap App Store region funded by a hard-to-buy gift card is not automatically better than a flat web price you can pay by card.
What this means for "cheapest country" claims
Every floor price on this site is an App Store regional list price in USD equivalent. When a guide or post quotes a different number for the same product, check the channel before assuming one of them is wrong — one may be the web price and the other the App Store tier.
It also means the savings we report are channel-specific. If you pay on the web, the regional floors do not apply to you and the comparable saving is web list versus web list.
Risks and caveats
- Vendors change which channel gets the lower price without notice; re-check before buying.
- Buying on the web and then expecting App Store region benefits is a common mistake — the two do not transfer.
- Region switching can conflict with platform terms and carries account risk. We do not guarantee any method stays allowed.
- List prices are not checkout quotes: tax, card FX fees and gift-card premiums are separate.
